Southampton & Salisbury Canal

Dimensions and Distance Tables

Dimensions

The canal’s Act of Parliament states that the waterway was to have a surface width of 27ft (8.2m) reducing to 15ft (4.6m) at a depth of 4ft (1.2m) to take boats 60ft by 8ft (18.3m by 2.4m). There was to be a towing path 9ft (2.75m) wide with a gravel path of just 2ft (0.6m) in width. On the Andover Canal with which this canal was closely connected, their Act of Parliament says the boats should also be 60ft by 8ft but the locks are said to have been big enough to take boats 65ft (19.8m) long with a beam of 8ft 6in (2.6m). This difference was probably caused by confusion between the size of the lock chambers and the boats to be used within them.

Distance Tables

Distance tables are given below for the canal route from God’s House Tower, Southampton to the city of Salisbury, including the Northam Branch and the section of the Andover Canal between Redbridge and Kimbridge Junction. The distances given below have been carefully measured using Google Earth. The position of features marked with "?" are unconfirmed and are estimates.

The canal between Alderbury and Salisbury was not completed - indeed part of it was not even started. Several slightly different routes were proposed - the distances quoted below (marked with *) from Shute End to the city are not for any constructed canal but are merely intended to give an idea of how far the company failed to achieve its target. See the Shute End to Salisbury portion of the Portrait for further information.

Each location in the tables is given as an OS National Grid Reference and the latitude and longitude (in WGS84) of this position is also given by default in degrees, minutes and seconds to the nearest second. One second of arc in latitude is approximately 30 metres and for longitude in this part of Hampshire and Wiltshire just under 20 metres.

For those who prefer (and who have JavaScript enabled), these WGS84 values can be displayed instead as decimal degrees or degrees and decimal minutes by using the Settings button (via the Page Links button on small screens).
